Committees

The work of the Chamber of Commerce of Smyth County, Inc. is carried out by nine committees with the following examples of duties:

Agriculture Committee:

Kindergarten Farm Tours, Town & Country BBQ and other agriculture-related events/or projects.
Chair: Seth Umbarger

Area Beautification Committee:

Encourages and promotes programs, projects and campaigns to improve the attractiveness of Smyth County. Beautification Awards, county-wide clean up days, and Christmas Decorating Contests.

Commercial & Industrial Support Committee:

Provides business and industry support through events and activities, publishes various directories of Smyth County businesses. Business Appreciation Breakfast & Golf Tournament, quarterly networking breakfasts, Top Level complimentary invitations to Chamber events.  Assists with the organization of the Career Day for High School students.

Education & Recreation Committee:

Tom Burkett Scholarship, Children First Award, Student Government Day and other agriculture and education related events and/or projects.  Promotes and develops programs that expand, enhance and improve education services available in Smyth County.
Chair: Donna Fender

Legislative Committee:

Legislative Breakfast, Meet the Candidates Forums, work with Town Council and Board of Supervisors, following legislation that impacts our community.
Chair: Dustin Powers

Membership Committee:

Focuses on maintaining and increasing Chamber membership.  Promotes the Chamber Cash incentive program and ribbon cuttings at new businesses.  The Chamber President-Elect will serve on this committee and would encourage fundraising.

Smyth County Young Professionals for Progress:

Develops and supports new leadership among young professionals in the Smyth County community.  Works cooperatively with regional YP organizations and develops projects such as Ca$h Mobs, Mixers, SCYPP Gatherings, and the Summer Concert Series.  

Smyth Enterprise Center Committee:

Promotes entrepreneurship activities and events, including Entrepreneur Express and Growing Sales workshops, and a possible Youth Entrepreneurship Forum.   The Chamber President serves on this committee.

Special Events/Tourism & Community Action Committee: 

Promotes tourism as a business and industry and use special events to encourage tourism.  Supports and participates in community events and festivals.
