2018 Winter Networking Breakfast

Join us for our Winter Networking Breakfast event on Wednesday, December 5, 2018.  The event will be held at the Smyth County Community Hospital Cafeteria.  Registration will begin at 7:45 am with breakfast at 8:00 am.

There will be opportunities for one-on-one networking, and business introductions.  Best of all, the breakfast event is FREE and open to Chamber members and non-members from the community!  Seating is limited, so preregistration is required.

This breakfast is free because of our sponsor The Lincoln Theatre who will present a brief program. 2019 marks the fifteenth anniversary of the theatre’s grand reopening after extensive restoration!

Annual Christmas Decorating Contest

The Chamber of Commerce of Smyth County, Inc. once again encourages the citizens of Smyth County to celebrate the holiday season in style by decorating your homes for the Annual Christmas Decorating Contest. The contest is open to any citizen whose home is in Smyth County. Judging will take place during December 8-15, from 6:00 – 9:00 pm each night, and will be conducted by the Chamber’s Area Beautification Committee.

The criteria for judging will be creativity, holiday spirit, and overall beauty. Prizes will be awarded for the top three places:
First Place $100
Second Place $50
Third Place $25

Please help us pick the winner for the 2018 Smyth County Overall Area Beautification Award! Seven Smyth County businesses, organizations, or churches have been selected as the Area Beautification Award winners for their district by our committee. Now, we need YOU to help pick the winner overall!

The Area Beautification Contest is a project of the Chamber of Commerce of Smyth County, organized in conjunction with the Smyth County Board of Supervisors. The Supervisors select judges for each of the magisterial districts and contests are held on a monthly basis, April-October. One winner is selected each month and represents one of the magisterial districts. Each of the district winners are eligible for the Overall Area Beautification Award. The Overall winner is selected through an open polling process each fall. Dollar General – Rye Valley District
The residents of Sugar Grove are excited to have the convenience of Dollar General in their area. The new building was built on a vacant lot adding beauty to the community.


Colorworks Salon & Nail Bar – Chilhowie District
Michelle Widener opened Colorworks in Chilhowie over a year ago. They have added beauty in Chilhowie both on the outside and the inside of the building in the historic Main Street.


Art on 16 Contemporary Art Gallery – Royal Oak District
Bepe Kafka turned a dream into a reality when she opened this art gallery. Transforming an empty building into a place to display art, she has added beauty to Marion including the bright, cheery yellow exterior.


Freedom Tabernacle Ministries – Atkins District
A labor of love, the new sanctuary for Freedom Tabernacle was built with the money raised by the congregation with God’s blessing to further minister to the people of our region.


Atwell Farm – North Fork District
The Smyth County portion of Ceres, Virginia is home to Atwell Farm. The Atwell Family; Archie, Darleyne, Charles, Melissa, and Maika take great pride in their farm and its beauty is the evidence.


Saltville Preservation Alliance – Saltville District
The Saltville Preservation Alliance is a group of ladies who work often behind the scenes to add beauty to their beloved Saltville. From tending flowerbeds (pictured) to decorating empty shop windows for the Labor Day Celebration, these ladies give their time to make Saltville more beautiful.


Harwood Apartments – Park District
Restoring the old Harwood building in downtown Marion, Joe Ellis has built beautiful, modern apartments. The building is a beautiful juxtaposition of the old industrial framework with hardwood floors and accents.



October 2018 Chamber Networking Breakfast

Join us for our Networking Breakfast event on Tuesday, October 30th at the Holston Hills Community Golf Course. There will be opportunities for one-on-one networking, business introductions, and a special presentation for Breast Cancer Awareness Month by Dawn Holman, MD with Smyth County Surgical Associates and Norah Nutter, NP with MSMG OB/GYN.

Registration begins at 7:45 am and the breakfast begins at 8:00 am. Breakfast will be catered by Sisters Cafe in Marion. Please register by October 23, 2018 to help us get a head count.

2018 Annual Chamber Dinner Meeting

On behalf of the Board of Directors of the Chamber of Commerce of Smyth County, Inc., I would like to invite you to attend the 2018 Annual Dinner Meeting. The event will be held on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 at 6:00 pm at Riverfront Restaurant in Chilhowie. The cost of the dinner will be $25 per person.

The meal will be roasted turkey breast, roast beef with gravy, roasted baby potatoes, green beans, breaded okra, macaroni and cheese, baked apples, and a roll. Drink and dessert are included.

This event not only serves as the annual meeting of the Chamber’s general membership, but it is also a time for us to make special recognitions. At this year’s Annual Dinner, we will announce the Overall Winner of the Area Beautification Award, present the Tom Burkett Scholarships, induct new members into the Smyth County Hall of Fame, and recognize the 2018 Chamber leadership.

In addition to these recognitions, we will have a special keynote speaker Joshua Lewis, the Executive Director of Virginia’s Industrial Advancement Alliance a regional economic development organization promoting new industrial development in the counties of Smyth, Wythe, Bland, Carroll, Grayson, and the City of Galax. A native of Southwest Virginia, Joshua is passionate about economic growth in rural Virginia and is knowledgeable about the challenges and opportunities facing rural communities.

2018 Annual Town & Country Dinner

The Annual Town & Country Dinner will be held on Tuesday, September 18, 2018 at 6:00 p.m. at the Chilhowie Land Company’s Airplane Hangar. This event is a fun time for town and country folks to get together and share a wonderful evening of good food and fellowship. The menu will include grilled steak, baked potato, salad, ice cream, pie, and beverage. The cost of the meal will be $20.00 per person.

It is very important that we know how much food to purchase and prepare. If you plan to attend, please register no later than September 11, 2018 to allow us to order the steaks. It’s big, Andy – BIG!

Five of Mayberry’s most famous citizens are joining an all-star cast for Marion’s upcoming Vintage Market and “Mayberry Comes to Marion” celebration on Saturday, October 6th.

Ernest T. Bass, Floyd the Barber, Howard Spraig, Otis Campbell, and Charlene Darling will be strolling Main Street, visiting folks, posing for pictures, and cutting up as “America’s Coolest Hometown” brings small town country living back in fashion.

“We are so excited to have these fine actors join in the fun,” said Marion mayor David Helms.  “Having folks that look and act like the original characters will add to the festivities.”

In addition to the cast of characters, Marion will host their first-ever Vintage Market on Broad Street, with vintage and handmade vendors, antique tractors, live bluegrass music, look-alike and old-fashioned dress contests, “Opie’s Corner” kids’ activities, nostalgic games and a Mayberry trivia contest from 10 until 5, sponsored by the Chamber of Commerce of Smyth County and Past Time Antique Emporium of Marion.

That evening at 7, host Tim White welcomes Mayberry to the stage of the historic Lincoln Theater for a live taping of “The Official Television Series of Virginia – Song of the Mountains”.  Featured artists include Rodney Dillard and the Dillards (“The Darlings”), Maggie Peterson (Charlene Darling), the Mayberry Deputy (David Browning), and The VW Boys.  Tickets to the concert are available by calling the Lincoln at (276) 783-6092 or online at www.thelincoln.org.
