Woofstock 2023

On June 10, 2023 Smyth County held their 1st Annual Woofstock, a fundraiser for the Smyth County Humane Society hosted by The Chamber of Commerce of Smyth County and The Town of Chilhowie. The community really came together and was able to have an amazing day for pets and of course their humans. Below are some photos from the event.

The Smyth County Humane Society is an all-volunteer, that has served domestic pets of Smyth County for over 35 years. To address the overpopulation of homeless dogs and cats in the area, they work closely with the public and the Margaret Mitchell Low Cost Spay/Neuter Clinic in Bristol to help spay/neuter domestic cats and dogs, as well as those community cats that go through our TNR (Trap/Neuter/Release) program.

Other on-going efforts include working closely with their sister organization, the Smyth Animal Rescue, to pull abandoned, stray, and unwanted animals from the county shelter and place them in adoptive homes or transport them to other animal rescues for adoption. As a result of our joint efforts the euthanasia rate at the shelter has been drastically reduced in the past few years. In addition, we collect and distribute pet food to needy families and assist with emergency medical expenses for animals in families who cannot afford it. Working together the two organizations rescued 957 animals, 997 animals received assistance for spay/neuter, and 32,000 pounds of dog and cat food were distributed throughout the county.
